Mindful Meditation for teachers
Recently my school implemented mindful meditation therapy to staff once a week during planning. I cannot express how grateful I have become for this form of meditation during the school day. The mindful meditation facilitator was brought in during a professional development day this past in February to explain the process of mindful meditation. As awkward as we all thought it was, the staff seem to think it was interesting and signed on to participate. Hence, I have taken part in four sessions with my team, and there have been so many benefits to this therapy. Personally, it has helped with my ability to focus during the day. Mindful meditation has improved my ability to teach my students and collaborate with my team. I have also been more relaxed and less stressed after participating in mindful mediation session. There is nothing like breaking up the monotony of the school day to stop and peacefully focus on breathing to relax. The first time I participated, I fell into a very deep meditation and had to be awakened by the instructor. I drifted into a space of relaxation and focused to the point I forgot I was in the teacher’s lounge at work. This form of mindful meditation has become so popular with the staff that we are going to implement mindful mediation as part of our School Wide Enrichment during the next school year. I have found this form of meditation during the school day has many benefits; therefore, I have also started participating in mindful meditation outside of school. In conclusion, “Mindful Meditation” is the next best thing for education!

What a great addition to the day! I commend your principal for taking a risk and offering teachers such a unique experience. Thank you for sharing the impact it had on you and ability to work with students and collaborate with your team. Do you feel like this type of activity has improved teacher morale or school climate because of the impact on teachers?
ReplyDeleteI can definitely see the "zen" like effects across the culture of our school. Teachers look forward to doing this and it creates an anticipation to stay calm and less stress through the week. Therefore, student indirectly benefit from this activity.
Deletewow; shout out to your school leaders for thinking outside the box. I think it takes a lot of courage for school leaders to invest and implement a strategy that is not the norm. I am all for meditation and become a yoga and workout junkie during the summer.
ReplyDeleteI recently began practicing mindfulness. It has completely altered my self-awareness and presence while at work. I also found that I needed a lot of support in the beginning. Did you feel that the one professional development was sufficient or was there continued support for mindfulness beginners?
